The term ‘cloud computing’ is in routine use within the IT industry. Vendors, service providers, industry analysts and other commentators use the term freely.

But what, precisely, does it mean?

In this short research note, we summarise the results of an online survey of 401 IT professionals. When presented with a list of hosted service descriptions and various types of enabling technology, which ones did they think could legitimately be regarded as cloud?
