Why NVM matters

Non-volatile memory (NVM) is the latest in a series of technologies designed to bring data ever-closer to the computer processor. It aims to combine the persistence we expect from disk, flash and tape with the speed we expect from memory.

While NVM can be deployed as a fast block device (a drive, in other words), the more interesting use case is when it is built into memory modules knowns as NVDIMMs, as for example, Intel has done with its Optane DC Persistent Memory. Why does NVM matter, and how could your organization and its applications gain from adopting NVDIMMs?
